Got a gross salary range? How to compare the offer in net terms

A job advert or recruiter tells you that the budget for a role is between 6,000 and 8,000 lei gross per month. Under the tax scenario used below, the endpoints equal 3,523 lei and 4,680 lei net. The 2,000 lei gross difference becomes a 1,157 lei difference in the amount paid into your account.

This comparison applies to July 2026 for a full-time main job, with no dependants, children eligible for a deduction, meal vouchers, income-tax exemption or relief for employees under 26. Different offer terms produce a different result.

Clarify what the range includes before comparing amounts

First ask whether the range is gross or net. The calculator and example below start with gross salary, but an informal conversation may use "salary" without specifying which one. Ask for written confirmation before comparing the offer with your current salary.

Check whether the endpoints describe the fixed monthly salary or total compensation. A budget of 8,000 lei that includes a conditional bonus is not equivalent to a gross base salary of 8,000 lei every month. A useful comparison requires:

  • monthly gross base salary;
  • the bonus formula, frequency and conditions;
  • benefits granted separately, such as meal vouchers, medical insurance or a transport budget;
  • the number of guaranteed salaries or payments each year;
  • working hours and contract type.

An offer of "up to 8,000 lei" states only the ceiling. Ask which experience, responsibilities or results correspond to each part of the range and where the employer would place you.

6,000-8,000 lei gross means 3,523-4,680 lei net in July 2026

We calculated both endpoints for the same month with the same options. CAS is the pension contribution, CASS is the health insurance contribution, and CAM is the work insurance contribution paid by the employer. Amounts are rounded to the nearest leu under the calculator methodology.

A gross difference of 2,000 leiproduces a net difference of 1,157 leiin this scenario. About 57.9% of the gross difference reaches net pay. Company cost differs by 2,045 lei.

This tool estimates only the fixed monthly salary in this scenario. It excludes bonuses, vouchers, supplements, part-time contracts and exemptions. Entered values remain in your browser and are not saved.

The gross-to-net conversion rate changes within the range. At 6,000 lei gross, the employee in this example still receives a personal deduction of 130 lei, which reduces the income-tax base. At 8,000 lei gross, income exceeds the ceiling for that deduction. The 1,157 lei net difference is therefore 13 lei less than a linear 58.5% conversion applied to the 2,000 lei gross difference.

For a fixed reference below the lower endpoint, the 5,000 lei gross-to-net page shows net salary, taxes and employer cost separately.

Net salary and company cost answer different questions

Net salary estimates the money paid into your account. Total cost shows what the company pays after adding CAM. In this example, company cost is 2,045 lei higher at the upper end of the offer, although the gross salaries differ by 2,000 lei.

Company cost can help during negotiations, but do not add it to your salary. The 180 lei CAM at the upper endpoint is an employer liability, not money you receive. Likewise, a "total budget for the role" does not prove which base salary will appear in the contract.

The guide to salary taxation in Romania separates the shares of company cost that go to net pay, employee deductions and employer taxes.

Compare meal vouchers and bonuses separately

Meal vouchers are credited separately from cash salary. They can increase the total value received in a month, but their taxes can reduce the amount transferred to your bank account. Do not treat 900 lei in vouchers as "900 lei extra net" or add it directly to the table result.

For a bonus, ask whether the quoted amount is gross or net and whether payment is guaranteed. An annual bonus of 12,000 lei is not automatically worth 1,000 lei gross every month: the payment date, award conditions and possibility of losing it all affect the comparison.

Enter vouchers and other options in the advanced salary calculator. Compare fixed salaries first, then add benefits one at a time. You will see what changes the money in your account and what remains a separate benefit.

Start with the net amount when you have a net target

If you need 5,000 lei net, do not negotiate from a percentage estimate. Under the same July 2026 assumptions, the net-to-gross calculator finds a gross salary of 8,548 lei. Rounding and deductions may make the exact figure differ by a few lei from a calculation made on your phone.

Use your desired net salary as a personal threshold, then compare it with the proposed fixed salary. A likely bonus and benefits improve an offer, but they do not replace guaranteed monthly income if you rely on it for regular expenses.

What to check before accepting an offer

Keep the written offer and check the same items for each employer:

  1. currency, gross amount and covered period;
  2. base salary that will appear in the contract;
  3. guaranteed and conditional bonuses;
  4. vouchers and benefits outside salary;
  5. schedule, overtime and probation period;
  6. date and criteria for the next salary review.

After negotiating the amount, confirm that it appears in the contract before your first day. The guide to working without an employment contract explains why probation cannot begin before the contract.

Directive (EU) 2023/970 requires candidates to receive information about the initial salary or its range in time for informed negotiations. Its definition of pay also includes variable components and benefits. On 4 August 2026, L445/2026 remained a bill under consideration by the Romanian Senate's standing committees. The article on pay transparency in Romania in 2026 separates the EU rule from the status of L445/2026.

Sources and verification date

We checked the tax rules, example and legislative status on 4 August 2026. The calculation uses the consolidated Fiscal Code, the rules and rounding documented in the ImpozitSalariu.ro methodology, Directive (EU) 2023/970 and the Romanian Senate file for L445/2026. Recalculate both endpoints with the month, deductions and benefits from your own offer.
